A rabbit should drink water the way nature intended. Drinking from a bowl instead of a bottle improves hydration, is preferred by rabbits, and is more hygienic. Water bottles for small animals come in all colours and sizes, but the general construction is the same – an upside-down water bottle with a long metal tube at the end. Inside this tube is a mechanism preventing leakage when it's not in use.
Here's the basic idea:
The mechanism designed to prevent bottle leakage lends itself to poorer hydration outcomes. Rabbits who drink from bowls are better hydrated.
Rabbits evolved to drink water from the ground, not with an upward head tilt.
Bacteria builds up inside the metal tube of the bottle, even if the bottle is cleaned daily.
Solution: Use heavy ceramic bowls that can't be easily tipped or thrown. We recommend our Scruffs Bowls, which can be found under SHOP > ACCESSORIES. They are chew & bite resistant, heavily weighted for stability, dishwasher & microwave safe, and they keep food & water cooler for longer!
